ICAR-Central Potato Research Station, Gwalior (MP)
Central Potato Research Station was established in October, 1978 at Morena (Madhya Pradesh) as a Regional Station of Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla. The area of the station was only 20 ha. Hence, it was shifted to Gwalior during April, 1981. The total area of the farm taken over at Gwalior was 179.312 ha.This area of the farm land was reduced to 171.877 ha after decision of honourable Madhya Pradesh High Court order. Presently it is 167.178 after taking over by state government for severage plant (4.699ha).As on today 109.76 ha is under cultivation of which about 35-40 ha area is under nucleus and breeder seed. The station is located at latitude of 26oN, 78oE. The annual rainfall at this station is ranging from 600-800mm.The climate for the production of breeder seed of potato at Gwalior is quite favourable and the potato seed produced is of high quality.
The Central Potato Research Station, Gwalior has substantially contributed in the growth and development of potato in the region as well as at the national level. The mandate of the station is research on different aspects of potato and to produce breeder seed of potato. Breeder seed produced at the station caters the need of Madhya Pradesh in particular and other states like Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh.The station is producing breeder seed to the tune of 5000 to 6000 q annually. Research works on Cropping systems, Agro-techniques for potato production, adaptation studies of potato under climate change scenario, insect vectors, potato crop protection, seed potato technology aspects, hi-tech planting material. and AICRP (Potato) is being carried out. Besides research and seed programme of potato,This station also serve as one of the all India Co-ordinated research project on potato. Research work is being carried out by three scientists in three disciplines. They are being supported by twelve technical’s and 28 supporting staff. Beside there are 2 administrative personal. A single story small building at Gwalior how says laboratories, library and a small meeting hall. Crop production and crop protection labs are well equipped. Rotational crops viz., Gram, Lentil and Mustard etc are also grown for seed and ware purposes for increasing the revenue of the station. Underground irrigation system has been installed at the Farm. Recently, drip irrigation system installed over 4.5 ha under Stage 4 and 0.80 ha under Stage -1 and also sprinkler irrigation system under 0.05 ha under net house. In addition to above a small unit along with fertigation facility has been installed for climate change experiment.
