ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute Regional Station, Modipuram Campus is the biggest Research Station of the Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla. It has three units, i.e. Modipuram, Machhri and Pabli. At Modipuram main complex, potato research in various disciplines through 15 interdisciplinary programmes is carried out for Central-Indo Gangetic plains. The Machhri and Pabli units are used exclusively for seed production. Besides research and seed production programme of potato, this Campus also serves as one of the centres of All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Potato. Wheat seed production is also carried out in the rotational areas for National Seeds Corporation Ltd. Research work is being carried out by 16 scientists in six disciplines. They are supported by 39 technical and 25 supporting staff. Besides, there are 11 administrative personnel headed by two Assistant Administrative Officers. A four storied building at Modipuram houses laboratories, library, museum and a small meeting hall. The laboratories are well equipped. The administrative block comprises of two single storey buildings which accommodate the office of the Joint Director and the administrative wing.
ORIGIN
The history of the station has links with the establishment of Potato Experimental and Trial centre at Babugarh, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh in 1957 and seed production farm at Macchri near Daurala (Meerut) in 1971. Subsequently, a potato research cum seed production unit was established at Modipuram (Meerut) in 1977 simultaneously Babugarh station was closed. In 1978, both Modipuram and Daurala units were amalgamated and the station was renamed as Central Potato Research Station, Modipuram in 1979. In 1999, the station was upgraded and renowned as Central Potato Research Institute Campus, Modipuram. It is situated at 8 KM from Begum Bridge, Meerut City, on Western side of Meerut-Roorkee Road (NH-58). The Latitude and Longitude of the campus are 29.1o N and 77.92o E respectively. It altitude is 300 meter above Mean Sea Level (amsl). It has 151.74 ha farm for seed production and research activities, while 15.41 ha is constructed building area. Out of this, 22 ha are used for conducting field experiments and the remaining area is utilized for seed production of potato and wheat crops. The Campus is having l6-room Guest House-cum-Hostel with a dining hall and a meeting room for meeting the requirements of visiting officials and trainees. A seven room building at Machhri is serving as field lab-cum-stores for the seed production unit.
