Programme 1: Development of improved varieties
  • To develop early bulking and short duration varieties (60 & 75 days) suitable for early and main plantings to fit in intensive cropping system.

Programme 7: Nutrients and water management
  • To develop spatial variable maps of available nutrients in potato growing pockets based on sample analysis. Classification of developed maps using appropriate geo-statistic tool based on nutrient content and their validation.
  • To delineate nutrient deficiency in potato growing areas and forecasting of nutrient imbalances and deficiencies and preparation of nutrient management map for recommending area specific management strategy.
  • Establishing relationship among leaf chlorophyll content, leaf N content and tuber yield in important cultivars. Developing real time N management based on chlorophyll content index and leaf colour chart.
  • Use of the omission plot technique to determine the requirements of N, P and K fertilizers, to overcome P and K deficiencies and avoid the mining of these nutrients from the soil.
  • To develop nutrient/water use efficient cultivars for northern plains and screen/test germplasm collection and advance breeding lines to identify desirable nutrient and water efficient parental lines.
  • Studies on root parameters as related to N, P and K use efficiency of potato cultivars.
  • To compare micro-irrigation systems in potato.
  • Variety and growth period specific water requirement of potato.

Programme 8:   Physiological and genetic approaches in managing heat and water stress under sub- tropical environment in potato
  • Impart heat tolerance in new potato varieties that is at least 2OC higher than Kufri Surya.
  • Impart drought tolerance so that developed varieties have higher water use efficiency and can save at least 25% water for comparative tuber yield.

Programme 9:   Molecular characterization, detection and management of potato pathogens
  • Collection and molecular characterization of major pathogens (Ralstonia solanacearum, Alternaria spp., Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium spp.) and pests (white flies and thrips) of potato.
  • Effect of climate change on genome evolution of pathogens.
  • Host-pathogen interaction study for virus diseases and late blight.
  • Standardization of diagnostic tools for detection of major potato pathogens.

Programme 11:    Potato Storage: Efficient and eco-friendly method for improved quality
  • Identification of environment friendly compounds for dormancy prolonging and sprout inhibition in potatoes.
  • Use of residue free sprout suppressants in table and processing potatoes under refrigerated and non-refrigerated storage.
  • Investigating the changes in physiological and biochemical attributes and plant growth regulators associated with dormancy and sprouting.
  • Correlation between changes in growth regulators and biochemical attributes during different phases of tuber life cycle.
  • To define pre-harvest biomarkers (tuber maturity and curing) for improved storability and processing quality of potatoes in heaps & at 12oC.

 tuber borne pathogens of potato
  • Collection of Ralstonia solanacearum, Streptomyces species and Rhizoctonia solani isolates, associated with bacterial wilt, common scab and black scurf diseases of potato from different potato growing areas of the country and their maintenance.
  • Phylotype, race and biovar identification of R. solanacearum isolates from various parts of the country.
  • Identification and molecular characterisation of Streptomyces species, associated with common scab of potato.
  • Molecular marker development for specific identification of  anastomosis group of Rhizoctonia solani isolates from various parts of the country.
  • Standardize DNA detection tools for reliable detection of latent infection by R. solanacearum.
  • To develop and evaluate new products for management of major tuber diseases of potato.
  • To manage common scab of potato through regulating soil moisture.
